Putting wind in the sails of Prague
Local residents, frequent visitors and people involved in community life around the Vltavská metro station have some unique experience in this area. They are well familiar with the values and problems of a place that can differ for each demographic group and each type of users. Therefore, before the competition was announced, suggestions and data were collected which will subsequently be incorporated into the assignment for the architectural competition for the Vltava Philharmonic Hall. We spoke with people who use the area now, as well as potential future visitors to the Vltava Philharmonic Hall and its surrounding.s
Anyone interested was able to complete a questionnaire, or join a guided tour with the Vltava Philharmonic team and with the First Deputy Mayor for Local Development, Petr Hlaváček. Participation also included round tables with local people involved, community monitoring, movement monitoring and representative sociological surveys extending beyond the bounds of the Prague 7 district to include all Prague residents and frequent visitors to cultural events.
The sociological surveys found that the Vltava Philharmonic Hall project has considerable support both from the people of Prague 7, as well as from visitors to the district and people who regularly attend cultural events (between 60–70 %). The data and suggestions collected also showed how people use the area around the Vltavská metro station now, what they like and dislike about it, where they see the place as having potential and how they would like to use this place in the future. The challenge for the architectural designers will be to combine the needs of all the target groups and create a concept that will include a wide open space with a number of accompanying functions that, at the same time, will enable the site to be used undisturbed for its main purpose - as a concert hall.
