Drilling works explore the history of the Vltava Philharmonic Hall site

Since June 2024, drilling measurement works have been underway at the future Vltava Philharmonic building site, thanks to which the team of designers and architects will precisely determine the composition of the geological subsoil under the proposed Philharmonic building.

Based on historical records and past construction activity, the two geological strata are expected to be obliquely deposited, which may run into each other and also twist differently, meaning relatively rapid changes for the foundation of any building.

Along with the engineering geological survey, two other surveys are being carried out: a geotechnical and a geophysical survey, which will help to determine the degree of tectonic disturbance and the mechanical properties of the rocks, as well as help to detect possible fractures and their orientation.

The geological survey boreholes on the construction site are also being used to measure vibrations from metro and tram operations. Combining these surveys optimizes the cost of individual measurements and minimizes traffic constraints in the area.

Detailed subsurface surveys of the Philharmonic building site are already being carried out now, well in advance so that the design and construction planning can be precisely tailored to the building site. This is to avoid any major changes to the project at a later date.
